Car rental and driving abroad:
-
For renting a car, you should have the rental voucher and driving licenses – both Israeli and international.
-
it is advisable to check which side of the road to drive on in the countries where you will be driving. If driving on the left side – make sure you feel comfortable with it before booking the car rental.
-
Abroad, it is recommended to use Google Maps rather than Waze. There are countries (such as South Korea, for example) where Google Maps does not work, and a local app must be used.
-
The travel times shown on maps are "net" – you should account for an additional 20%-30% for photo stops, restrooms, and traffic jams.
-
Check the traffic laws in the countries you will be driving in, especially regarding right and left turns.
-
It is a good idea to refuel frequently, as there are areas with few gas stations.
-
One-way car rentals (where the return is not at the pick-up location) are sometimes impossible or very expensive – check this in advance if you plan to do so.
-
Rent a car that suits your size and equipment, but not too large, depending on the roads in the countries you will drive in.
-
Check what your insurance covers – it is recommended to have full insurance that also includes the undercarriage, tires, and windows, to avoid high payments for damage you may not even be aware occurred.
-
Thoroughly inspect the car you receive while still in the rental company's parking lot. Document and report any issues.
Financial handling:
-
It is advisable to bring both cash and credit cards, and not to rely on a single payment method. The amount of cash depends on the norms in the countries you are traveling to.
-
It is recommended to pay in local currency (after conversion) to avoid high exchange rates or receiving less change than required.
-
Notify your bank about your trip to prevent card blocks and payment refusals due to suspected fraud.
-
It is advisable to make withdrawals from ATMs during the day and in safe locations such as banks or hotels.
-
It is recommended to split cash and credit cards between different bags for extra security.
-
Keep printed copies of your credit cards and the contact numbers of the credit card companies in case of loss or theft.
