A Local Secret in Amsterdam: Discovering the City Through its Canals
When visiting Amsterdam, most travelers naturally think of the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, or the Anne Frank House. These famous museums are indeed world-class attractions, but if you are looking for an experience that is a bit less touristy, more intimate, and surprising – we have a recommendation for you.
The Museum of the Canals (Museum of the Canals) is a true gem. It is located inside a spectacular, classic 17th-century canal house on the Herengracht canal.
The venue offers a fascinating, interactive multimedia journey that moves through several rooms, unfolding 400 years of history:
From a fishing village to a metropolis: The story of Amsterdam's transformation over the years.
An engineering marvel: A behind-the-scenes look at the construction of the iconic canals and buildings, emphasizing the "Golden Age" alongside a reflection on less glorious periods of the Dutch past.
Why do we love it? Beyond the highly-invested exhibits (there is an excellent audio guide in Hebrew/English), the museum visit is light, seamless, and does not require hours of exhausting walking. It was a highly enjoyable and enriching experience for us, and we are sure you will love it too.
