Spain: Setenil de las Bodegas – Village Under the Rocks
Setenil de las Bodegas is a tiny village with just ~2,600 inhabitants, yet it's one of the most unique stops in Andalusia.
Located about 30 minutes by car from its famous neighbor Ronda, it receives daily a number of tourists that equals or even exceeds the entire village population. And here's the reason for all the interest: the village is literally built into giant rock overhangs, creating streets that look like they were carved by nature itself. Walking through its lanes, you'll see whitewashed houses, cafés, and shops tucked beneath the stone, creating natural shade that's especially welcome in southern Spain's heat. It's also a wonderful place for photography, since the contrast between sunlight, shadow, and rock makes every corner look striking. Despite the crowds, Setenil still feels authentic because residents continue to live in their cliff-side homes, maintaining daily life alongside tourism.
For a more peaceful experience, visit outside peak hours - early morning before 11 a.m. or late afternoon after 4 p.m., when you can enjoy the village's unique charm without the rush.
Parking can be challenging, as there's no parking inside the historic core, but a great solution is parking at the Bus Parking and taking the free shuttle (the "blue train") to the village center - a 15–20 minute walk without it.
