Uruguay - 'Overseas' Adventure - An attractive day trip by ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento
Most visitors to Argentina follow fairly common routes, but they skip a special visit to the old town of Colonia in Uruguay, which waits just across the Río de la Plata on a fast one-hour ferry ride from Buenos Aires. You can reach Colonia for a light and pleasant day trip (or even an overnight stay if time allows), enriching your travel experience in Argentina, as it is completely different from anything you will see in Argentina. The 17th-century old town of Colonia del Sacramento is a fascinating mix of ancient and picturesque streets, cobblestone alleys, and colorful buildings influenced by Portuguese architecture from the days it was under their rule, and it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In a few hours of visiting Colonia, you can walk through the old town and along its main street - Calle de los Suspiros, climb the lighthouse for a stunning view, visit the bullfighting arena and intriguing museums, and even enjoy the sandy beaches. Ferries depart from La Boca or Puerto Madero. It is recommended to book tickets in advance and avoid weekends when Colonia fills up with locals. Also, don’t forget to bring your passports!
