What to do when you have a 6+ hour layover in Bangkok and want to avoid both boredom and central city traffic?
Flying to the East with El Al and have a layover of a few hours in Bangkok? Instead of getting stuck at the terminal with nothing to do or fighting heavy traffic on your way to the city center, there is a much better alternative: just a 35-minute drive from BKK Airport, completely bypassing the city's notorious traffic jams, awaits the Muangboran Ancient City, the world's largest outdoor museum!
🏛️ What is it exactly? A spectacular park spreading across roughly 75 acres (300 dunams) and beautifully shaped in the form of the map of Thailand. Here, you can wander among golden palaces, floating temples, and historical landmarks. Unlike typical miniature parks, a large portion of the structures here are built to full scale or near full scale!
🛵 How to get around the park? The site is massive, and walking through it in the Thai heat is highly discouraged. The best ways to explore are:
Golf Cart: Around 350 Baht for the first hour (and about 100–200 Baht for each additional hour). It’s a fun, shaded, and breezy experience (remember to bring your driver's license!).
Bicycles: Free and included with your admission ticket.
Private Taxi: You can arrange in advance with your airport taxi driver to wait for you and drive you around inside the site (this is exactly what we did).
💰 How much does it cost? A taxi ride from the airport and back costs about 400–500 Baht each way (approx. $12–$15). Pro tip: While a walk-up ticket at the counter costs 700 Baht, booking in advance on apps like Klook drops the price to just 350–400 Baht.
⏱️ Who is it for? Perfect for layovers of 6 hours or more. Alternatively, if you are staying in Bangkok for a few days, this site comes highly recommended as a relaxed day trip just outside the city.
